PICKLEBALL COMES TO TURNER GALLERY
Pickleball is coming to the Turner Contemporary on Sat 18 June.
GB Pickleball and Margate’s Turner Contemporary are teaming up to celebrate their new exhibition Seeing Round Corners – The Art of the Circle and the return of Sheena Maclean- Bell, US Open silver medallist, freshly back from playing in the US Open Pickleball Championships in Naples, Florida.
Pickleball, the fastest growing sport in America is also bucking the trend here in the UK, a fun and sociable sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. Played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court with a dedicated Pickleball net using a carbon composite paddle and a plastic, whiffle ball.
GB Pickleball is working hard to develop this addictive game across Great Britain and has just secured funding to offer pickleball across Thanet 7 days a week. The sport appeals to people of all ages and abilities and is easy to learn the basics. Thanet based Motiv8 Sports, a local community sports company has been integral in the sports development and is passionate to see it become an officially recognised sport by Sport England at a meeting later this month.
So why not pop along on Sat 18 July between 11am and 3pm to have a go of this intriguing sport as well as seeing a demonstration by Sheena and her mixed doubles partner Dave Wood along with Harrison Wood (16) who has recently returned from playing in his first international tournament in Amsterdam, where he was the youngest player entered.
Clare Maclean-Bell, Director of Motiv8 Sports said, “This is an fantastic opportunity to showcase this amazing sport at such a prestigious venue, it is great to have sport and art working together in this way”
